Enjoy a day out with the kids!
Family time creates wonderful memories for your kids and finding an activity to keep everyone entertained is easy in Christchurch. We’ve selected a few of our favourites to inspire you; some are free, while others might be saved for a special occasion. Go to it, enjoy a day of family fun!
The Antarctic Centre
No need to mount an expedition, you can experience Antarctica without leaving Christchurch! Survive an Antarctic Storm, learn about life in modern day Antarctica and Scott Base, and hang out with Little Blue Penguins and Huskies! There’s also the Hagglund ride, a simulated 4D cruise and more.
Halswell Miniature Trains
Does your kid love trains? Take them to Halswell Domain to ride the miniature railway, which runs on Sundays from1-4pm, weather permitting. Make sure to like their Facebook page to keep up to date with opening hours and special events, including night rides. The kids will also enjoy the playground and you might even see model boats on the lake.
There’s always lots to see and do at the Museum. Kids will love Discovery, the natural history centre bursting with weird and wonderful things to explore. They can dig for fossils, watch the live tarantulas, gaze at the wall of preserved specimens, look through the drawers of pinned insects and learn all about our amazing world and the creatures that share it.
Air Force Museum
The Air Force Museum is the perfect place for families to spend an hour or an afternoon. There’s loads of interesting aircraft to see and lots of hands on exhibitions and displays. You’ll find the play area on the first floor, where kids can try on an Air Force uniform jacket, do a puzzle and ride the coin-operated aeroplane. Make sure to pick up a Museum hunt (suitable for 3-12year olds) from the Welcome Desk.
Ferrymead Heritage Park
This historic township from the early 1900’s features houses, a picture theatre, classroom, church, jail, railway station, post office, general store and much more. The kids will love Ferrymead's collections of aeroplanes, trains, trams, fire engines and tractors as well.
Do you have a LEGO crazy kid? Imagination Station has LEGO and DUPLO pits where children and adults can come build to their hearts content. Admission is free, although it’s best to make a booking if you plan to visit during the weekend or school holidays.
