Auckland Art Gallery
Spend some time looking at the art in the exhibition spaces, then stop by the Creative Learning Centre, a hands-on, family friendly space. With interactive and exciting installations, it’s designed to help kids discover art and how engaging it can be.
Free family drop-in sessions take place on Saturday afternoons. Designed for children aged 4 and up, you can get creative, read storybooks relating to exhibitions or play a Gallery Game with the family.
Butterfly Creek offers something for everyone. Check out the tropical butterfly house, the amazing array of animals to see, touch and learn about, or travel back in time to when dinosaurs ruled! The Dinosaur Kingdom attraction features an indoor display of dinosaurs, fossils and skeletons with fantastic dinosaur photo opportunities. You can also meet Scar and Goldie, NZ’s only salt water crocodiles.
There’s a lot to see and do at Auckland War Memorial Museum! Make sure to take the kids to the Weird & Wonderful Discovery Centre where they can look, touch and explore. There are thousands of collection items on display, microscopes for looking at specimens in detail and fun digital interactives.
Entry is free for Aucklanders with ID and proof of residence. Get yourself a free MyMuseum card if you plan on visiting often.
Go to the playground!
For a fun family outing that’s easy on the budget, head to a playground! Auckland is lucky to have an array of playgrounds, suitable for kids of all ages, from toddlers to teens. Check out the Our Auckland website to see their take on the very best, plus you’ll find many more playground reviews.
NZ Maritime Museum
Located in the heart of Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour, the Maritime Museum tells the stories of our seafaring heritage. The exhibitions honour those who sailed to the limits of their imagination including the first Pacific voyagers, early European immigrants and a tribute to Sir Peter Blake. You can even get out on the Waitemata Harbour in a heritage vessel. If you live in the Auckland region, bring proof of address to visit the galleries for free!
Kiwi Valley Farm Park
As Kiwi as pineapple lumps, Kiwi Valley is a hands on, farm experience for city kids and their grown ups! Enjoy the relaxed country environment as the kids go on a tractor ride, pat some rabbits, feed the animals, ride a pony, play on the playground and get lost in the maze! Eat at the fully licenced cafe or take your own picnic to enjoy.
